What is Capsule Endoscopy?

Capsule Endoscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic test where you swallow a small, camera-equipped capsule that captures images of your digestive tract—especially the small intestine, which is hard to view with traditional endoscopy.

Why is Capsule Endoscopy Done?

Used to detect:

  • Unexplained GI bleeding

  • Small intestine ulcers or inflammation

  • Crohn’s disease

  • Tumors or polyps in the small bowel

  • Celiac disease (in some cases)

  • Iron deficiency anemia

How It Works

  • You swallow a pill-sized camera
  • It travels through your digestive system
  • Captures thousands of images
  • Data is transmitted to a recorder worn on your waist
  • Images are reviewed by a doctor for diagnosis

Symptoms That May Require Capsule Endoscopy

  • Chronic unexplained abdominal pain

  • Blood in stool

  • Long-standing anemia

  • Weight loss without cause

  • Suspected small intestine disorders

Benefits of Capsule Endoscopy

  • Painless and non-invasive
  • No sedation or hospital stay required
  • Helps examine areas that are hard to reach
  • Real-time images of the entire small bowel

Preparation Guidelines

  • Fasting 8–12 hours before procedure

  • Avoid iron supplements and certain medications (as advised)

  • Follow specific prep instructions for clear imaging

Recovery & Aftercare

  • Resume normal activities post-swallowing

  • Capsule passes naturally in stool within 1–2 days

  • Inform doctor if capsule is not passed within 2 days
