What is ERCP?

ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat problems in the bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreas using a combination of endoscopy and X-rays.

Why is ERCP Done?

ERCP is performed to identify and treat:

  • Gallstones in bile ducts

  • Blocked or narrowed bile ducts

  • Pancreatic duct issues

  • Tumors or cancers of the liver, bile duct, or pancreas

  • Bile leaks after gallbladder surgery

Symptoms That May Require ERCP

  • Jaundice (yellow skin/eyes)

  • Upper abdominal pain

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Pancreatitis (recurrent)

  • Abnormal liver function tests

  • Fever with suspected bile duct infection

How is ERCP Performed?

  • A flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth to the small intestine
  • A contrast dye is injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts
  • X-rays are taken to view any blockages or abnormalities
  • Treatment (like stone removal, stent placement) can be done during the same procedure

ERCP Treatment Options

  • Removal of gallstones

  • Stent placement for blocked ducts

  • Biopsy of tumors

  • Drainage of bile or pancreatic fluid

  • Treatment of strictures or leaks

Recovery After ERCP

  • Mild throat discomfort or bloating for a few hours

  • Most patients go home the same day

  • Avoid food and drink for a few hours post-procedure

  • Follow-up as per doctor’s advice

Risks & Complications

  • Pancreatitis (most common)

  • Bleeding

  • Infection (cholangitis)

  • Perforation (rare)

  • Allergic reaction to dye or sedation
