What is a Fungal Infection?

A fungal infection occurs when fungi invade the skin, nails, or internal organs, leading to irritation, itching, and discomfort. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments and can affect anyone. While most fungal infections are not serious, they can be persistent and require treatment.

Causes of Fungal Infections

Symptoms of Fungal Infections

• Thickened, discolored, or crumbling nails (in nail fungus)
• White patches in the mouth (oral thrush)

Diagnosis of Fungal Infections

A dermatologist diagnoses fungal infections through a skin examination. In some cases, skin scrapings, fungal cultures, or Wood’s lamp tests may be used to confirm the type of fungus.

Treatment for Fungal Infections

• Topical Antifungal Creams – Clotrimazole, miconazole, terbinafine, or ketoconazole.
• Oral Antifungal Medications – Fluconazole, itraconazole, or terbinafine for severe infections.
• Medicated Shampoos – For scalp fungal infections like dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis).
• Home Care – Keeping affected areas clean, dry, and well-ventilated.

Prevention of Fungal Infections

• Maintain Good Hygiene – Wash hands and affected areas regularly.
• Keep Skin Dry – Use antifungal powders and wear breathable fabrics.
• Avoid Walking Barefoot – Especially in public showers, pools, and locker rooms.
• Change Socks & Underwear Daily – Prevents excessive moisture buildup.
• Avoid Sharing Personal Items – Towels, razors, and footwear should not be shared.
