What is GI Bleeding?

Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is bleeding anywhere in the digestive tract. It can be minor or life-threatening and often requires urgent medical care.


Causes of GI Bleeding

Upper GI:

  • Stomach ulcers

  • Esophageal varices

  • Gastritis

  • Tears in the food pipe (Mallory-Weiss)

Lower GI:

  • Hemorrhoids

  • Anal fissures

  • Colon polyps or cancer

  • Inflammatory bowel disease

  • Diverticulosis


Symptoms of GI Bleeding

  • Vomiting blood (bright red or coffee-ground)

  • Blood in stool (black or red)

  • Dizziness or fainting

  • Abdominal cramps

  • Fatigue or low blood pressure
