What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)?

IBD is a group of chronic conditions that cause inflammation in the digestive tract, mainly Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. It affects digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall gut health.

Types of IBD

  • Crohn’s Disease: Can affect any part of the digestive tract (mouth to anus), often in patches

  • Ulcerative Colitis: Affects only the colon (large intestine) and rectum, with continuous inflammation

Common Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain and cramps

  • Chronic diarrhea (sometimes with blood)

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Weight loss

  • Bloating and urgency to pass stool

  • Fever (in some cases)

Diagnosis of IBD

  • Blood tests (to check for inflammation/anemia)

  • Stool tests (to rule out infections)

  • Colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy

  • CT/MRI enterography

IBD Treatment & Management

  • Medical Treatment:
    Anti-inflammatory medications (5-ASAs)
  • Steroids (for flare-ups)
    Immune-suppressing drugs
  • Biologic therapy (advanced targeted treatment)

Lifestyle Tips:

  • Follow a low-fiber, balanced diet during flares
  • Avoid trigger foods (spicy, dairy, caffeine)
  • Stay hydrated
  • Quit smoking
  • Manage stress

Surgical Options:

  • In severe cases, surgery may be needed to remove damaged parts of the intestine

Prevention & Long-Term Care

While IBD cannot be fully prevented, managing symptoms early and following medical advice helps reduce flare-ups and complications. Regular checkups are important.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

IBD is a chronic condition that requires long-term management. With the right treatment plan, many patients achieve remission and lead a normal life.
