What is Leprosy?

Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. It primarily affects the skin, nerves, eyes, and mucous membranes. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications, including nerve damage and deformities.

Causes of Leprosy

  • Mycobacterium leprae infection
  • Spread through prolonged close contact with untreated patients
  • Primarily transmitted via respiratory droplets
  • Genetic susceptibility may play a role

Symptoms of Leprosy

  • Discolored patches of skin with loss of sensation
  • Thickened, dry, or scaly skin
  • Numbness in hands, feet, and affected areas
  • Muscle weakness and paralysis
  • Ulcers on the soles of the feet
  • Eye damage, leading to vision problems
  • Deformities in advanced stages

Types of Leprosy

Paucibacillary (PB) Leprosy (Mild Form)

  • Few skin lesions with limited nerve involvement
  • Less contagious

Multibacillary (MB) Leprosy (Severe Form)

  • Multiple lesions and nodules
  • Extensive nerve involvement
  • Higher bacterial load, more contagious

Prevention of Leprosy

  • Early diagnosis and treatment to prevent transmission
  • Avoid prolonged close contact with untreated patients
  • BCG vaccine may offer partial protection
  • Maintaining good hygiene and overall health

Treatment for Leprosy

  • Multidrug Therapy (MDT) (combination of Rifampicin, Dapsone, and Clofazimine)
  • Long-term treatment (6 months to 1 year, or more for severe cases)
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs (steroids, thalidomide) for nerve damage
  • Physical therapy to prevent disability
  • Reconstructive surgery for deformities
