What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition that causes rapid skin cell turnover, leading to red, inflamed patches with silvery scales. It can be itchy, painful, and affect various parts of the body, including the scalp, elbows, knees, and nails.

Causes of Psoriasis

  • Overactive immune system triggering inflammation
  • Genetic predisposition (family history)
  • Triggers like infections, stress, injuries, or medications
  • Environmental factors (cold weather, smoking, alcohol)

Types of Psoriasis

  • Plaque Psoriasis (Most common)
  • Raised, red patches with silvery scales
  • Guttate Psoriasis
  • Small, red spots, often triggered by infections
  • Inverse Psoriasis
  • Smooth, red, inflamed patches in skin folds (underarms, under breasts)
  • Pustular Psoriasis
  • White pustules with surrounding red skin, can be painful
  • Erythrodermic Psoriasis (Severe)
  • Widespread redness, peeling, and severe discomfort

Prevention of Psoriasis Flare-Ups

  • Keep skin moisturized and avoid harsh skincare products
  • Manage stress through meditation, exercise, or therapy
  • Follow a healthy diet (reduce alcohol, processed foods, dairy)
  • Avoid smoking and excessive sun exposure
  • Identify and avoid personal triggers

Treatment for Psoriasis

  • Topical treatments (Corticosteroids, vitamin D analogs, salicylic acid)
  • Phototherapy (UV light therapy to slow skin cell growth)
  • Oral & Injectable Medications (Biologics, immunosuppressants, retinoids)
  • Lifestyle management (Skincare routine, diet, stress reduction)
