What are Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)?

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), also known as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), are infections spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Some STDs can also be transmitted through blood, shared needles, or from mother to child during childbirth.

Causes of STDs

STDs are caused by different types of pathogens:

  • Bacterial Infections – Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis
  • Viral Infections – HIV/AIDS, Herpes, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Hepatitis B
  • Parasitic Infections – Trichomoniasis, Pubic Lice, Scabies

Common Symptoms of STDs

  • Unusual genital discharge (white, yellow, or green)
  • Pain or burning sensation during urination
  • Sores, blisters, or ulcers in the genital, anal, or oral area
  • Itching, rash, or irritation in the genital region
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the groin
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Fever and flu-like symptoms (in some cases)

Many STDs can be asymptomatic, meaning you may not have symptoms but can still spread the infection.

Prevention of STDs

  • Practice Safe Sex – Use condoms and dental dams correctly every time
  • Get Vaccinated – HPV and Hepatitis B vaccines can prevent certain STDs
  • Regular Testing – Get tested for STDs if you are sexually active
  • Limit Sexual Partners – Reduce the risk by having fewer partners and knowing their STD status
  • Avoid Sharing Needles – Prevents HIV and Hepatitis transmission
  • Education and Awareness – Understanding STD risks and symptoms can help with prevention

Treatment for STDs

  • Bacterial STDs (Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis) – Treated with antibiotics
  • Viral STDs (HIV, Herpes, HPV) – No cure, but antiviral medications can manage symptoms
  • Parasitic STDs (Trichomoniasis, Pubic Lice) – Treated with antiparasitic medications

Early detection and treatment are crucial to preventing complications like infertility, organ damage, and increased HIV risk.
