Stroke is a medical emergency that demands immediate attention. At Numed Super Speciality Hospital, we offer comprehensive stroke management and rehabilitation services designed to reduce brain damage, save lives, and help patients regain independence and functionality.

Our multi-specialty team of neurologists, critical care experts, physiotherapists, speech therapists, and rehabilitation specialists provides evidence-based care from the emergency phase through full recovery.

What is a Stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Brain cells begin to die within minutes, which is why early diagnosis and treatment are critical.

There are mainly two types of stroke:

  • Ischemic Stroke: Caused by a blood clot or blocked artery (most common).

  • Hemorrhagic Stroke: Caused by a ruptured blood vessel or bleeding in the brain.

  • Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): Also called a mini-stroke; it’s a temporary blockage with warning signs.

Common Symptoms of Stroke

Recognizing the symptoms early can save a life. Use the FAST acronym:

  • F – Face drooping on one side

  • A – Arm weakness or numbness

  • S – Speech difficulty or slurred speech

  • T – Time to call emergency services immediately

Other symptoms include:

  • Sudden confusion or memory loss

  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes

  • Difficulty walking or loss of balance

  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

  • Dizziness or loss of coordination

Causes & Risk Factors

Several medical conditions and lifestyle factors increase the risk of stroke:

  • High blood pressure (Hypertension)

  • Diabetes

  • High cholesterol

  • Heart disease or atrial fibrillation

  • Smoking

  • Excessive alcohol intake

  • Obesity and physical inactivity

  • Family history of stroke

  • Age over 55

FAQ's

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the stroke. With prompt medical care and personalized rehabilitation, many patients recover significantly. However, some may continue to have long-term effects that can be managed with therapy and support.

Stroke rehabilitation should begin within 24 to 48 hours after the patient is medically stable. Early rehab improves the chances of regaining lost abilities and independence.

Recovery time varies depending on the severity of the stroke, the area of the brain affected, and the patient’s overall health. Some recover within weeks, while others may take months or longer.
