What is Urticaria?

Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a skin condition characterized by red, itchy, raised welts that appear suddenly. These welts can vary in size and shape and may disappear within hours or persist for weeks. Urticaria can be acute (lasting less than six weeks) or chronic (lasting more than six weeks). It is not contagious but is often triggered by allergens, infections, or other environmental factors.

Causes of Urticaria

  • Allergic Reactions – Foods (nuts, shellfish, dairy), medications, insect stings, or pollen
  • Infections – Viral, bacterial, or fungal infections can trigger hives
  • Physical Triggers – Pressure, heat, cold, sun exposure, or exercise
  • Autoimmune Disorders – The immune system mistakenly attacks the skin
  • Stress and Emotional Factors – Anxiety and stress can worsen symptoms
  • Underlying Health Conditions – Thyroid disease, lupus, or other immune-related disorders

Types of Urticaria

  • Acute Urticaria – Short-term hives that resolve within six weeks
  • Chronic Urticaria – Hives lasting longer than six weeks, often without a clear trigger
  • Physical Urticaria – Caused by external stimuli like heat, cold, pressure, or exercise
  • Dermatographic Urticaria – Hives that appear when the skin is scratched or pressed
  • Angioedema – Swelling in deeper layers of the skin, often affecting the lips, eyelids, or throat

Symptoms of Urticaria

  • Red, raised, itchy welts on the skin
  • Welts that change shape and move around the body
  • Burning or stinging sensation
  • Swelling (angioedema) in severe cases
  • Symptoms worsening with heat, stress, or certain triggers

Diagnosis of Urticaria

A doctor diagnoses urticaria through a physical examination and medical history. Allergy tests, blood tests, or skin biopsies may be conducted to identify underlying causes or triggers.

Treatment for Urticaria

  • Antihistamines – Help reduce itching and inflammation
  • Corticosteroids – Prescribed for severe cases to control swelling
  • Epinephrine (for anaphylaxis) – Used in life-threatening allergic reactions
  • Avoiding Triggers – Identifying and staying away from allergens or irritants
  • Cool Compresses – Soothe itching and discomfort
  • Lifestyle Adjustments – Stress management, wearing loose clothing, and using gentle skincare products

Urticaria can be managed effectively with proper treatment and lifestyle changes. Identifying triggers and following a treatment plan can help prevent flare-ups and improve skin health.
