What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a skin condition characterized by the loss of pigment in patches due to the destruction of melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing skin color. This results in white patches appearing on different parts of the body, including the skin, hair, and sometimes even inside the mouth or eyes.

Causes of Vitiligo

  • Autoimmune response – The immune system mistakenly attacks melanocytes.
  • Genetic factors – A family history of vitiligo may increase the risk.
  • Environmental triggers – Sunburn, stress, or chemical exposure may contribute.
  • Hormonal changes – Certain hormonal imbalances might influence vitiligo.
  • Oxidative stress – Imbalance in free radicals can damage skin cells.

Types of Vitiligo

Segmental Vitiligo
  • Affects only one side or a specific area of the body.
  • Usually develops at an early age and progresses for a short period.
Non-Segmental Vitiligo
  • The most common type, affecting both sides of the body symmetrically.
  • Spreads gradually over time.
Focal Vitiligo
  • Limited to a few small patches without spreading.
Universal Vitiligo
  • Extensive loss of skin pigment across the body.

Prevention & Management of Vitiligo

  • Sun protection – Use broad-spectrum sunscreen to prevent further depigmentation.
  • Healthy diet – Antioxidant-rich foods may support skin health.
  • Reduce stress – Practice meditation, yoga, or relaxation techniques.
  • Avoid skin trauma – Cuts, burns, or friction can trigger new patches.
  • Regular check-ups – Early management can help slow progression.

Treatment for Vitiligo

  • Topical treatments (corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors) to help repigment skin.
  • Phototherapy (PUVA or UVB therapy) to stimulate melanocytes.
  • Micropigmentation (tattooing) for localized areas.
  • Depigmentation therapy for extensive vitiligo cases.
  • Skin grafting for small patches with stable vitiligo.
  • Emerging treatments (JAK inhibitors, cell therapy) for promising results.
